Which Compact Digital Camera is the Best Overall? Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3 Fits the Bill

!: Which Compact Digital Camera is the Best Overall? Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3 Fits the Bill

In this writer's humble opinion, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3 fits the bill.

There are many, many digital cameras on the market, and technology is advancing at such a rapid rate that it is very difficult to keep up. Each camera manufacturer makes claims of excellence or features about every new camera release to lure you, the buyer, into a purchase. And how does a camera become king of the hill and make it to the top of the camera heap anyway?

It starts with a reputation. Certain manufacturers have been able to maintain a good reputation for producing excellent cameras. We buyers tend to trust a manufacturer if we have had a good experience with them.

Then there are the camera review geeks. These are camera "experts" who look at each new release and put them through a series of standard tests to compare them to other cameras of similar design. These online web sites such as DPReview.com, StevesDigicams.com, and Imaging-Resources.com have become will known and trusted for their honest opinions and ratings. Manufacturers send their newest releases to those who have gained good standing in the online camera community.

Finally, there are the buyers - those who actually buy the cameras and use them, not necessarily analyzing how each pixel is rendered on a print, but deciding if the camera meets the individual's expectations. These evaluations are extremely useful in making a camera buying decision.

Before buying your next camera, be sure to check online stores where the camera has been sold. Some very useful sites to check include Amazon.com, B&H Photo, and Adorama.com. Enter the name of the camera you are interested in, then click on the user comments.

All of this leads up to how the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3 gets the rating as "Best Compact Digital Camera Over All".  It is recommended highly at both Imaging-Resources.com and DPReview.com, AND the user rating (from folks who actually paid money for the camera) is about 4.4 out of 5 on both DPReview and Amazon.

The specs for the DMC-ZS3 camera are as follows:

10.1 Megapixel Resolution 12x Digital Zoom 3" LCD screen 27 Scene Modes with Intelligent Auto Face Recognition and motion tracker 720p HD Video Capture

If you are looking for a great all-around camera, you can't go wrong with this one.

The new Lumix ZS3 features 10.1-megapixels, a 25mm ultra-wide-angle lens and 12x optical zoom, meaning it has added 2x optical zoom to the award-winning TZ-series camera, yet reduced its size. The ZS3 also features a Leica DC Vario-Elmar lens and High Definition (HD) video recording ability, known as AVCHD Lite. The ZS3 is the world’s first digital camera to feature HD video recording in AVCHD Lite. Compared with the conventional Motion JPEG format, AVCHD Lite allows longer recordings with breathtaking HD visual and audio quality. This combined with a well-considered control interface, which includes a dedicated movie recording button on the camera’s back panel, makes the ZS3 a hybrid model that performs admirably for both still and motion image capture.

CCD VS CMOS Cameras

!: CCD VS CMOS Cameras

Sensors CCD (charge coupled device) and CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) represent two different technologies for the capture of digital pictures. Each has its strengths and weaknesses, depending on applications. Neither of the two is not clearly superior to the other, despite the claims of supporters of both camps.

In the last five years, both technologies have changed a lot, but forecasts of a rise or fall on the other is not justified. Positive in this struggle for supremacy is to improve the quality of cameras that use such sensors and reduced prices.

Both types of sensors perform the same function - transform light into electrical charge. One simple way of presentation of the sensor used in digital camera is a two-dimensional array of millions of tiny solar cells, which convert the light from a small section of electrons in the picture. CCD and CMOS devices use different technologies to accomplish this task.

The next step is to read the value (accumulated charge) of each cell image. In CCD sensor charge is transported throughout the chip and read at the end of the massif. Analog-digital converter converts the value of each pixel in a digital signal. Here is a special production process used to transfer charge through the chip without distortion. This leads to high quality in terms of precision and sensitivity to light.

For the production of CMOS chips using the traditional process, which make most microprocessors. In these sensors for each pixel has several transistors, which enhanced the signal. Many photons fall on the transistors, rather than fotodioda, which reduces sensitivity to light. The standard process for creating a CMOS chip, however, makes them significantly cheaper than CCD sensors.

Summary, the comparison between the two technologies is as follows:

• CCD sensors create high quality images with low noise. CMOS sensors are generally more sensitive to noise.

• CMOS sensors consume 100 times less power compared to CCD sensors, which use a process requiring a lot of energy.

• CCD sensors are in mass production from a long time, so that their technology is more mature. They provide better quality and more pixels. CMOS technology is younger, but has achieved in its development. Designers of CMOS devices make enormous efforts to improve the quality of the image.

In this situation difficult to be a clear line to divide the applications for which one or the other technology is the most suitable.  CCD sensors commonly used in cameras and cameras, which require high quality image with many pixels and exclusive sensitivity to light.

CMOS sensors traditionally have lower quality, lower resolution and lower sensitivity. They are cheaper and have longer battery life. But technology is constantly improving and go to approach to the opportunities of CCD devices for specific applications.
